Itinerary
Day 1 - Marrakech – ImiOughlad – Tizi N'Tachte – Tiziane
We start early in the morning from Marrakech for a pleasant drive south, passing through the Moulay Brahim Gorge and the Upper Valleys to reach the higher foothills of the Western High Atlas Mountains. Our path leads to Imi Oughlad (1,450 m), with Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m – the highest peak in North Africa), Aglzim (3,650 m), and Aksoual (3,847 m) towering in front of us. Here we meet the Berber muleteer crew – always a fun part of our treks.
We begin our trek heading northwest for a 2-hour acclimatization hike along switchback mule tracks, passing cornfields, pine, and juniper forests to reach Tizi n’Tachte (2,000 m). We stop here to enjoy views down into the Imlil and Ait Oussaden Valleys before continuing for another half hour to Imi n’Ifri, where we have our picnic.
After lunch, we take a gentle 2.5-hour hike southwest along a dirt track, descending to Assif n’Ait Oussaden and the red clay, terraced village of Tiziane (1,750 m). We spend the night in a gîte d’étape or bivouac.
Day 2 - Tizziane – Tizi N’Taghrhourte – D’knt
After breakfast, we hike up along the Assif n’Ait Oussaden Valley, passing through walnut groves to Tizi n’Taghrhourte (1,995 m), reaching a rare, almost flat stretch that leads to Assaka Spring. Here we stop for a picnic lunch.
In the afternoon, we hike down along the forest edge to reach D’knt village (1,870 m), where we enjoy dinner. We spend the night in a family home or in a bivouac.
Day 3 - D’knt – Tizi N’Tagdalte – TiziOussem
Our 3-hour morning hike takes us through groves of walnut trees and fields of corn and barley. Along the way, we encounter many sheep and goat herders, as well as women with children carrying heavy loads of dates and dried herbs. We pass Tizi n’Tagdalte and descend through juniper trees to a small spring, where we stop for a picnic.
After enjoying some refreshments, we continue down winding tracks on the upper slopes for approximately 3 hours, reaching a small river at the beginning of the Assif n’Ait Oussaden Valley. Our destination for the day is Tizi Oussem village (1,850 m), where we enjoy dinner and stay overnight in a mountain gîte d’étape.
Day 4 - TiziOussem – Tizi M’Zzik – Imlil – back to Marrakech
After breakfast, the path leads us up through pine and juniper trees to Tizi M’Zzik (2,450 m), followed by a gradual descent to M’Zzik village. Surrounded by orchards of cherry, apple, and nut trees, with the nearby peaks as a backdrop, we enjoy our picnic. In the afternoon, we continue down to Imlil village, marking the end of the trek, where transportation is provided to return you to Marrakech.
